Form Two (Year One)

In Form Two our children enjoy a learning programme that is individually tailored to them. Lessons in Literacy and Mathematics are taught each morning and topic based teaching follows in the afternoons.

Our lessons take a variety of forms, both within and outside the classroom. We enjoy circle times, forest school, science experiments, cooking, getting messy, ballet, music and drama.

Literacy

Each week we look at different genre of literature, including fiction and non-fiction. Our children read texts from the chosen genre and apply their new knowledge to their own writing. We explore popular books such as ‘The Jolly Postman’  and ‘Walking through the Jungle’ based upon the children’s learning styles, for example, dressing up as the characters, acting out a rhyme or following instructions to make a jelly.

Mathematics

The Mathematics curriculum is broken down into mini-topics. The focus of teaching continues to be on number recognition, place value and calculation strategies, including addition and subtraction and later, early multiplication. We also explore 2D and 3D shapes, direction, data-handling and measures using non-standard units.

Topic Work

Houses and Homes – We learn about modern homes and the children’s own lifestyles and compare these with homes from the past, particularly with homes from the Victorian era. The children also learn about the homes of a variety of animals, including the need for some animals to migrate or hibernate. We look at different types of home, what they are made of and we discuss the difference between a house and a home. The children explore how to make different homes for both animals and humans.

Sound - Over the course of the topic we explore how we hear sound and how our perception of sound can be altered. We learn about the American inventor Thomas Edison and how and why he created the first device to record the human voice. The children design and make a working musical instrument and take part in a variety of sound walks comparing and contrasting what they hear in a variety of different environments.

A Toybox of Colour - The children explore the development of toys over the last 100 years and compare and contrast their own toys with those of older family members. We look at how toys have changed in appearance (often in colour) and how we can distinguish an old toy from a new one. Science focuses on the effect of light on our perception of colour and what happens to a variety of toys if we leave them in sunlight or in the dark. The children also make a range of traditional toys including kaleidoscopes, puppets and moving pictures.

Travel and Transport - The topic is split into two key areas, one each half-term. During the first half of the term we look at transport through the ages and compare how people used to move with how the children get around today. Within this topic we look at the physicality of movement and will explore the simple effects of forces. The children also look at transport from around the world and design and make a variety of vehicles.

During the second half-term the children look forward to their holidays and think about their previous travels, discussing where they have been and what they have found there. We look at changes in the traditional seaside holiday over the last 100 years and design a healthy snack to take on a journey. As we explore around the world the children get a taste of modern foreign languages including French, Italian, Spanish and Russian.
