The academic standards of Numeracy and Literacy are a priority in Form 3. Wherever possible these skills are utilised in many areas of the curriculum. Regular home study tasks are set to reinforce competence.

Numeracy:

The children work in a variety of learning situations including whole-class, group, paired and individual activities. Each lesson begins with a 10 minute mental/oral starter and will lead into the main skill session. The objectives for Form 3 are based on the National Numeracy Strategy, Year 4. It is anticipated that the Year 4 children will at least achieve these objectives and will be encouraged to exceed them whilst the Year 3 children will be targeted to achieve these objectives rather than those set out in the National Numeracy Strategy, Year 3.

Literacy:

With daily reading activities individual, group and class reading sessions, our pupils make excellent progress; they are confident to read aloud, enjoy varied reading material and performing in school productions.

Writing for different purposes and audiences is the main focus throughout the year. Children explore the characteristics of various writing styles and develop their skills to produce extended pieces of work.

Within narrative, children look at planning a story by exploring different genres. They will check for writing style, type of language, plot as well as character and setting descriptions. These ingredients together with ongoing grammar exercises enable the children to produce their own stories and develop them into a book form with chapters or adapt into play-scripts.

Application of non-fiction text supports other areas across the curriculum. Examples include: newspaper reports, articles, persuasive writing, letters for various purposes, writing instructions for making a product, non-chronological reports and explanations can present factual information in poster or leaflet format.

Science:

Formal study in Science is undertaken to facilitate an investigative approach. Children select questions to investigate, their planning and research leads on to design a fair test where parameters are changed systematically. Accurate observation and recording is encouraged so that conclusions are reliable. Our children are encouraged to extend their knowledge beyond that required for Key Stage 2.

Our children enjoy a varied curriculum including: French, Dance, ICT, Music (including individual instrument tuition), Geography, Religious Education, Sports.

To stimulate debate and ownership Form 3 are encouraged to express opinion and participate actively in producing articles for “The Dower Star” school magazine.

Additionally the children participate in a school council which is seen as an important vehicle to bring about positive changes in the learning environment.

In Form 3 the aim is to establish a happy, productive working environment. Speaking and listening tasks provide opportunities for the children to share hobbies, interests and opinions with both friends and an adult audience. These important life skills equip children to be confident so as to encourage life long learning.
